CHARITY BENEFITS FROM FOOTBALL HERO TRIBUTE SONG - 01/03/07

The fans’ anthem that has immortalised premiership footballer Mark Viduka is soon to be made available to buy as a charity download.

The song, which has captured the imagination of football fans from the North East, was written by singer/songwriter Alistair Griffin, who counts himself amongst Middlesbrough Football Club’s biggest fans.

Based on the music of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, the song is a tribute to the Australian international captain and Middlesbrough striker. It immortalises his striking abilities in a football serenade that even had his team mates singing in the dressing room!

Alistair’s music lawyers are currently negotiating relevant permissions from Leonard Cohen’s publishers to allow the download to be made publicly available. These discussions are expected to be concluded shortly, following which the download will be made available on amazingtunes.com

Alistair Griffin said: “This song came about because I am passionate about football and music. Viduka is out of contract at the end of this season and I wanted to persuade him to stay on at Middlesbrough next season using a completely different approach - a song that shows him how important he is to the fans.

“Now, Middlesbrough Manager Gareth Southgate has embraced the tune as a way of raising money for his chosen charity, MacMillan Cancer Relief. As a result, the song will be one of the UK ’s first charity downloads and combines being a football fanatic with a great cause. It’s not my most important musical work but it has been great fun, especially if Viduka signs next season!”

Amazing Tunes founder Paul Campbell said: “We are delighted to be able to help such a worthy cause with such a great song. Amazing Tunes will be giving 100% of the revenue received from downloads to the nominated charity. A few weeks ago, we were involved in another charity song in praise of Alan Shearer, which was downloaded by Toon fans – it’ll be interesting to see if ‘Boro fans are more loyal and generous!.”
